Cleaning Your Gliderol Garage Door
To maintain smooth operation, an attractive finish, and to enhance the life of your Gliderol door, regularly wash the curtain with a sponge, soft cloth or soft bristle nylon brush and fresh, clean water. If this method does not remove all the dirt from the surface you may use a mild solution of pure soap or non-abrasive kitchen detergent and warm water. Please ensure you rinse the surface thoroughly, with clean water, to ensure all detergent is removed.
In the case of Timber garage doors, if the sealer appears dull or starts to peel a refresher coat will keep the timber protected and the door looking like new. Any door that has been exposed to severe weather such as hail needs to be re-sealed immediately.
Custom garage doors with aluminium frames and acrylic or prolycarbonate inserts should be regularly washed with fresh, clean water. If this method does not remove all the dirt from the surface use any non-corrosive/non-abrasive polycarbonate acrylic cleaner.
Caution: Never use abrasive or solvent type cleaners like turpentine, petrol, kerosene or paint thinners to clean door surfaces as it may ruin the finish.
Maintaining Your Gliderol Garage Door
Regular maintenance of your Gliderol Garage Door is necessary for smooth performance, good functionality and increasing the life of your door. Remember, defective garage doors can represent a serious hazard. Regular door maintenance helps to prevent accidents and avoid unnecessary service bills.
Visually Inspecting & Maintaining Your Residential Gliderol Roller & Panel/ Sectional Door
Conduct a visual inspection of mounting brackets, springs, tracks, guide lugs, fasteners, drive unit cables, weather seals, etc. for any wear and tear at least once every six months.
Roller Doors Only: Gliderol roller door curtain is made up of COLOR PLUS pre painted steel which is highly durable and decorative finish. For maintenance regularly wash the curtain by fresh, clean water to enhance its life and maintain attractive finish. If this method does not remove all the dirt adhered on the surface please follow below procedure:
- Wash the surface of the roller door curtain with a mild solution of pure soap or mild non-abrasive kitchen detergent in warm water.
- Application should be with a sponge, soft cloth or soft bristle nylon brush, and should be gentle to prevent shiny spots.
- The roller door curtain surface should be thoroughly rinsed with clean water immediately after cleaning to remove traces of detergent.
Caution: Never use abrasive or solvent type cleaners like turpentine’s, petrol, kerosene, paint thinners to clean roller door surface as it may ruin the paint.
Visual Inspection: Conduct visual inspection of mounting brackets, springs, tracks, Guide lugs, fasteners, drive unit cables, and weather seal etc. for any wear and tear at least once in every six months.
- Springs should be lubricated using grease once in six months for proper functioning of the door and locking mechanism should be twice a year with general purpose oil or motor oil.
- As Poly glide is self-lubricated it is important NOT to lubricate the guides. It is advised from time to time to clean the guides with spirit cleaner and polish with car polish. IMPORTANT: DO NOT LUBRICATE GUIDE TRACKS.
Door Balance: The roller door should be perfectly balanced for optimum performance and power consumption (for electric operation). Perform door balance test regularly at least once in six months to increase the efficiency of the roller door
- Fully close the door
- If the door is operated electrically put it to manual operation by pulling the manual release pin (refer owner’s manual).
- Lift the door manually to waist height, say one metre above the floor level you should be able to lift the door with little effort.
Panel Doors Only: Panel Doors need oiling every 3–6 months and servicing every 2 years (more often for coastal properties). Motor oil (in an oiling can), RP7 or WD40 are all suitable for use. Apply oil to hinges, springs and wheel bearings only (refer owner’s manual). It is not necessary to spray the chain unless it appears to be rusted. In this instance apply oil sparingly and wipe off any excess with a rag.
Gliderol Garage Door Balance Testing
Your Gliderol garage door should be perfectly balanced for optimum performance and power consumption (for electric operation). Perform a door balance test at least once every six months to increase the efficiency of your door:
- Fully close the door.
- If the door is operated electronically put it into manual operation (refer owner’s manual).
- Lift the door manually to waist height, say one metre above the floor level. You should be able to lift the door with little effort and the door should stay open at that position.
- If the door does not stay at that position (one metre) this implies the door is out of balance. Get the door balanced by a Gliderol authorised service agent.
Gliderol Garage Door Auto Reverse Testing
Automatic garage doors should auto reverse when they detect an obstruction while closing. Conduct an auto reversing test at least once every six months to prevent accident and damages to motor and control unit:
- Ensuring the door is properly balanced, as described above, fully open the door using handset.
- Place a 20cm thick object, preferably wood, below the door.
- Close the door when using a handset.
- The door should auto reverse after striking the object (wood). If it doesn’t, call a Gliderol authorised service agent to fix the problem. If the door is fitted with additional safety devices like a photo electric beam sensor to prevent human entrapment please ensure it works properly.
In general remote control transmitters will operate from much further than required. This can be as far as 50 metres. However, this can also be significantly reduced due to a number of building and environmental factors. As a rule Gliderol strongly suggest that all doors should be operated when they are in clear line of sight. The average opening or closing cycle time should be a matter of 12 – 15 seconds. Should any Gliderol door take longer than this to open or close consult your local service agent.
The courtesy light housed within the control box is activated during opening or closing and stays on for approximately 60 seconds.
Gliderol roller doors do by virtue of their construction require space to conceal the rolled up section of the door. On average the rule of thumb for domestic installations is that the door will occupy 450mm of space from the lowest point of the ceiling. Stand inside the garage or shed and look outward toward to street. Imagine the roller door sitting horizontally across the top of the opening. Its going to take up 450mm of space from the lowest point of the ceiling. If you have a low opening height and you intend to store a boat or park a 4WD in your garage – its always wise to check first.
Just as a car or a bike’s moving parts need regular attention, so do those on your garage door. Depending on frequency of use, it is recommended you have your Gliderol Garage Door serviced every six months. All Gliderol roller doors are designed to offer years of trouble free operation and generally require minimal maintenance.
Manually operated roller doors should operate freely in either the opening or closing direction. Roller doors which are either difficult to lift or which appear to fall when moving in the closing direction may require some adjustment to the spring tension. This is best left to the services of a suitably qualified technician. All roller doors operate with the assistance of specially designed torsion springs which are under tension – as such serious injury may be sustained if the adjustment procedure is not undertaken correctly.
Gliderol roller doors fitted with the Glidermatic remote control system should likewise require minimal maintenance. Any door which appears to be labouring during the opening or closing operation may also require some qualified adjustment. Ensuring that the guide sections in which the door runs are kept free from dust, dirt and other build up is a simple yet effective maintenance step which involves nothing more than carefully wiping the inside of the section with a rag.
Do not lubricate the guide sections with oil,grease or any other petroleum based product. Recent development in lubrication technology has witnessed the introduction of silicone sprays which are readily available and offer suitable lubrication for roller door guide sections. Refer to warranty recommendations in regards to service frequency.
All Gliderol roller doors fitted with either a Glidermatic or Roll.a.matic operator should not be locked during normal operation. The units are designed to hold the doors closed to prevent unauthorized entry. Should any attempt be made to force the door open from the outside the unique electronic control system will detect the forced intrusion and pulse the door to the closed position. If the door is inadvertently locked and the operator activated this will cause the unit to overload and force the gears to drive against the lock.
In such instances the power should be turned off immediately and a qualified technician may be required to return the door to its correct operation. If the roller door is not going to be used for a long period, possibly during holidays and you are concerned about security. Turn the power off, return the door to manual operation and use the key provided to lock the door.
